We stumbled upon the XYZprinting Da Vinci 1.0 when browsing for the latest technological gadget to gift a colleague’s 12-year-old son. What attracted us at first look was its sleek appeal, compact structure, and, of course, the blue. XYZ Printing had indeed done a good job of trying to secure a “love-at-first-sight” response for its DaVinci 1.0 from its prospective buyers. Now, all that remained was to check if it was as functional as it looked.
We decided to dig up some information on XYZ Printing itself. Turns out, the company is backed by Kinpo Group of Taiwanese origin, which is only the world leader in electronic manufacturing! Being the winner of CES 2014 Editor’s Choice Award for the most approachable and affordable 3D printer in the market is just a feather is Kinpo’s cap.
Next, we needed to know what this product could actually do. The final user, in our case, wasn’t going to be us but a 12-year-old boy. We wanted him to have a hassle-free experience when working with it.
Design Basics
This is a plug-and-play model with no time-consuming product assembly involved. You will find that the many vivid-colored filaments are also easy to install, refill, and swap. Even a child can use the DaVinci 1.0, provided he or she isn’t younger than 8 or 9 years and with parental supervision, of course.
The model is a fully-enclosed type, and with good reason too. It protects you from being exposed to high temperatures that come into play when printing takes place. The box-shape also ensures that you do not accidentally move the filament when it is running.
At 7.8 x 7.8 x 7.8 inch build or print volume, the DaVinci 1.0 claims to be approximately 70% bigger than other 3D printers. This converts to 200 x 200 x 200 mm. The product dimensions itself are 18.4 x 20 x 22 inch.
The DaVinci 1.0 currently uses ABS and PLA plastic as its print material.
Layer Resolution
The DaVinci 1.0 features an asymmetric 2-way Laser Scan Technology. It is this feature which gives you adjustable layer resolutions or thicknesses of 100 microns (fine) to 400 microns (ultrafast). This converts to a thickness of 0.1 mm to 0.4 mm.
Print Speed and Quality
The printing technique is Fused Filament Fabrication or FFF. This technique is capable of printing quite efficiently at a speed of 150 mm per hour. However, print speeds might vary depending upon the design you feed it. The product’s print quality might not be the best, but you’ll find it dependably good for small home-based needs or school projects for kids.
XYZprinting Da Vinci 1.0 Accessories
Accessories available for this item are ABS filaments, glue sticks, and 3D print removal tools.
Filaments are available in red, blue, white, green, magenta, and a variety of other colors. So, needless to say, you can print your work in a wide range of colors rather than just one. You can buy glue sticks as single units or in 12-stick packs that save you money. The removal tool is useful for removing the printed object off the bed and removing rafts and trimming supports.
Pros
The nozzle of this unit cleans itself, so you do not have to get your hands dirty. Children upwards of 9 years of age can easily use this product with basic supervision.
With the DaVinci 1.0, zero configuration is required to get your creativity started. The print software is easy to install, so are the filament spools as compared to other contenders. You get immediate access to a range of 3D graphic libraries on the manufacturer’s website. You can easily monitor the printing process, thanks to the transparent front panel. Once you have set up a file for printing, it is even possible to simply shutdown your computer without hindering the printing process.
Cons
You might also have to deal with software bugs that might creep up unawares from time to time, thus deteriorating the print quality. Also, you won’t be able to print an object in dual color on account of its single-extrusion printing nozzle.
XYZprinting Da Vinci 1.0 Consumer Reviews
On a scale of 1 to 5, 85% users have rated the DaVinci 1.0 Blue between 3.5 and 4 in terms of user-friendliness, printing ease, robustness, and dependability. Eight out of ten users find it to be the best domestic use machine for a price that is easy on one’s pocket. They also feel it is a good pick for students and professionals who are beginners in the field of 3D design and print technology. Approximately 88% user reviews say they would definitely recommend the product to a friend. The most common problems that even satisfied customers have pointed out are the noise levels and issues with the print software. However, considering the highlights of the machine, they were willing to sideline these issues without a second thought.
XYZprinting Da Vinci 1.0 Price
The DaVinci 1.0 is quite affordable for home use and reasonable priced. Some online websites and retail stores do offer six-month interest-free financing options with minimum monthly payments.
Summary
With features that outweigh its flaws, the DaVinci 1.0 is a definitely a good buy. It has been used successfully to print both simple and complex objects for home decor, educational tools, utility items and so much more. In short, this product provides true value for money. This product could also do with some healthier software which does not catch bugs often. We guess that would help bring in more customers. But, for the time being, we do recommend XYZ Printing’s DaVinci 1.0 for anyone looking to build their creativity in 3D design and print technology.
